LuckyLand Slots Shutdown Set for Sept. 14 as VGW Faces Crackdown

The LuckyLand Slots shutdown is set for September 14, 2026. Parent company Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW) is permanently closing the sweepstakes casino. It is the first VGW sweepstakes brand to be shut down outright, with the closure happening in stages.

Gold Coin purchases ended on August 3, and gameplay stopped on August 24. Players have until September 14 to redeem prizes before all account access ends. LuckyLand Slots launched in 2018, bringing its roughly eight-year run to a close.

Why Is LuckyLand Slots Shutting Down?

LuckyLand Slots ran on the standard dual-currency setup that defines sweepstakes casinos. Players bought Gold Coins for casual play and received Sweeps Coins that could be redeemed for prizes. That structure is exactly what a growing number of states are now targeting.

VGW has confirmed the closure affects only LuckyLand Slots. Its other brands are not part of this shutdown, including Chumba Casino, the separate LuckyLand Casino it launched in December 2025 for table games, and Global Poker, VGW’s sweepstakes poker room. For now, those platforms continue to operate where they are available.

Why The Sweepstakes Crackdown Matters For VGW

The regulatory pressure explains the timing. More than a dozen states have taken legal action or passed laws against sweepstakes and social casinos, per Covers, and that pressure has built quickly over the past year.

Montana was the first state to explicitly ban sweepstakes, through SB 555, which was signed on May 12, 2025 and took effect October 1, 2025. New York also cracked down on sweepstakes casinos in 2025. VGW completed its sweepstakes exit from the state on August 1, before lawmakers formally enacted S5935A later that year. California followed with AB 831, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom and effective January 1, 2026, according to Legal Sports Report. Louisiana’s HB 53 and HB 883 took effect August 1, 2026. HB 883 treats dual-currency online sweepstakes as illegal gambling by computer, according to Lexology. It also raised the maximum fine to $100,000. HB 53 expands the state’s racketeering statute to cover gambling offenses. Penalties can reach $1 million in fines and up to 50 years of hard labor, per Covers.

VGW is also dealing with turmoil at the top. Founder Laurence Escalante resigned as CEO and executive chairman in July 2026 after months on leave. His resignation took effect July 3, with Mats Johnson stepping in as acting CEO, according to PlayUSA and Gambling Insider.

What It Means For Global Poker Players

If you play poker on Global Poker, nothing changes today. LuckyLand Slots is a slots product, and its closure does not touch the poker platform. The LuckyLand Slots shutdown still matters to Global Poker players. Both brands sit under VGW and use the sweepstakes model facing increased state scrutiny.

This matters because sweepstakes poker is not a side option in much of the country. Regulated, real-money online poker is currently live in just six states: Nevada, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and West Virginia. Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine have also legalized online poker, but none currently have active operators.

Florida Adds Another Front In The Legal Battle

Florida is the most aggressive recent example. State Attorney General James Uthmeier filed two lawsuits in Hillsborough County in August 2026. The cases target VGW, including Chumba, LuckyLand, and Global Poker, as well as Stake and several payment processors, according to Legal Sports Report. The complaint alleges the platforms are running illegal, unlicensed online casinos.

The numbers involved are large. The complaint states VGW platforms generated more than $5 billion in revenue in 2025, with $3.7 billion coming from Chumba. It seeks permanent injunctions, disgorgement, restitution, and civil penalties.
