The crackdown has accelerated heading into fall 2026. In Oklahoma, SB 1589 became law in May 2026 through a veto override of Gov. Stitt, with the Senate voting 34-10 and the House 68-19. It carries felony penalties and takes effect November 1, 2026, making Oklahoma one of the next states where the new restrictions will take effect.

New York moved faster and harder. Gov. Hochul signed S 5935A on December 5, 2025, and it took effect immediately. Fines run from $10,000 to $100,000 per violation, and liability reaches operators, payment processors, geolocation vendors, and marketing affiliates.

They are part of a broader crackdown that has accelerated throughout 2026. Indiana HB 1052 took effect July 1, 2026, and explicitly covers dual and multi-currency models. Tennessee SB 2136 was signed May 22, 2026, and prohibits dual-currency sweepstakes gaming. Louisiana enacted HB 883 and HB 53 in mid-May 2026, effective August 1, 2026, with penalties up to $1 million. Maine LD 2007 took effect July 29, 2026, and prohibits online sweepstakes games built around dual-currency systems and redeemable prizes.

Several laws passed in 2025 also shaped the sweepstakes landscape heading into fall 2026. Montana, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, and California passed legislation targeting sweepstakes gaming. Other states take a different approach. Idaho, Michigan, and Washington restrict sweepstakes play through existing gambling laws or regulatory enforcement.

Why It Matters to Sweepstakes Poker Players
