Texas Card House Houston Adds Security After Armed Robberies Hit Area Poker Rooms

  • At least four Houston-area poker rooms have reportedly been targeted by armed robbers in recent weeks.
  • Texas Card House Houston was not robbed but now keeps an extra security guard on site at all times.
  • No arrests have been made, though police appear to have identified at least one suspect.

Texas Card House Houston has added an extra security guard after at least four poker rooms in the Houston area were robbed over the past month, according to a November 2 report.

Texas Card House Houston was not one of the clubs robbed. The extra guard will be on duty 24/7 to help keep players and staff safe. No arrests have been reported so far.

Which Houston Poker Rooms Were Targeted

Three of the poker rooms that were robbed have been named. The most recent reported robbery happened at Capri Poker Club in Webster, about 25 miles from downtown Houston, in late October.

More than a dozen armed robbers reportedly entered Capri’s 20-table poker room and demanded money. Spades Poker House in Baytown and Empire Poker Club were also robbed, according to PokerNews.

Capri plans to move to a new location around the start of 2027. The club said the move is because its lease is ending, not because of the robbery.

What Investigators Have So Far

No arrests have been reported so far, but police may have identified at least one suspect.

Capri Poker Club said its security footage appears to show someone who may have also been involved in the Spades Poker House robbery.

Police have not confirmed whether the robberies are connected.

How Texas Card House Responded

Texas Card House has six locations across Texas. Its Houston club has added an extra security guard who will be on duty 24/7.

The company has also increased security at its Dallas location, but that decision was reportedly not related to the Houston robberies.

This isn’t the first time Houston poker rooms have been targeted. We previously covered a robbery at Legends in our report on poker room thieves getting more brazen. In another case, armed robbers followed players home from Lucky J Social Club in Houston.

How Texas Poker Clubs Operate Under State Law

Texas poker clubs charge players membership and seat fees instead of taking a cut of each pot. However, whether these clubs are legal under Texas gambling laws is still being debated.

Our Texas poker laws guide explains how these clubs work and the legal issues they face.

What This Means for Texas Poker Players

If you play poker at a Houston-area club, ask staff about their security measures before you play. Be careful when leaving, too. The Lucky J case shows that players can also be targeted after leaving a poker room.

Here are a few ways to stay safe when playing live poker:

  • Avoid showing large amounts of cash at the table or in the parking lot.
  • Leave with a friend when possible, especially late at night.
  • Pay attention to any vehicles that may be following you.
