While male players have often dominated the World Series of Poker, WSOP women have created some of the biggest hands in history in Las Vegas. Women in poker are the overlay, and in recent years, stars of the felt such as Kristen Foxen, Barbara Enright and Kathy Liebert have been joined in the ranks by Ladies Event superstars such as Jammie Kerstetter, Heather Alcorn and the two-time back-to-back winner of the event, Shiina Okamoto.

A poker pioneer with a fearsome record at the felt, Liebert won the $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout event in 2004 for $110,180, one of three women to win open events at the WSOP that year. A former Party Poker Million winner too, Liebert’s poker prowess has seen her win over $7 million at the live felt, and she is in the Women in Poker Hall of Fame.

The only woman ever to reach the final table of the WSOP Main Event, Barbara Enright is a three-time WSOP bracelet winner, having taken gold in Seven Card Stud in both 1986 and 1994, as well as conquering Pot Limit Hold’em two years later. The only woman who is present in all three Halls of Fame, Enright has cashed 21 times at the WSOP.

A double WSOP bracelet winner, Jen Harman is the best example of a female player who is recognized by fans of both sexes as one of the poker greats, no matter her gender. Harman won bracelets in 2000 (No Limit 2-to-7 Draw) and 2002 (Limit Hold’em) and was the female face of Full Tilt Poker during its pomp. A poker boss.

The English player Olivia ‘Liv’ Boeree has also won a WSOP bracelet, and much more recently than her previously mentioned peers. Alongside her boyfriend Igor Kurganov, Boeree took down the Tag Team event of 2017 for a score of $273,964. She has enjoyed EPT success, winning the 2010 San Remo Main Event for $1.7m and came fourth in the 2024 WSOP Paradise Main Event for an incredible score of $2.8 million.

A three-time WSOP bracelet winner, Vanessa Selbst also took home back-to-back North American Poker Tour Main Events and a PCA High Roller. In her illustrious career, Selbst crushed in the biggest poker games, winning almost $12m at the live felt alone and sits inside the top 100 players of all-time. Taking WSOP gold in PLO, 10-Game 6-Max and the $25k-entry Mixed Max NLHE event, Selbst semi-retired some years ago to start a family.

Although she is yet to win a WSOP bracelet, Maria Ho is a poker and World Series of Poker legend. A formidable player who is equally at home in large multi-table tournaments and tough high rollers, Foxen has won five WSOP titles in 2013 (Ladies Event), 2016 (NLHE Bounty), 2020 (Online NLHE 6-Max), 2023 (Online NLHE Crazy Eights) and 2024, where she won a $1,000 NLHE 6-Max event.

The youngest-ever winner of a WSOP Main Event, let alone as a female player, Norwegian legend Annette Obrestad made history 18 years ago. On 17 September 2007, Obrestad won the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe Main Event while still just 18 years old, one day before turning 19. On the right side of poker law due to being in Europe and winning $2.01 million, Obrestad eclipsed Annie Duke who had won $2 million at the 2004 Tournament of Champions, making Obrestad’s victory the record for a single-event payout to a female player.

Winning back-to-back titles in 1,000-player+ Ladies events in 2024 and 2025, the Japanese player came second in the previous year’s competition in 2023 before gaining revenge by winning in 2024 against Jamie Kerstetter. In 2025, Okamoto successfully retained her title, beating Heather Alcorn before taking to social media to declare her feelings after the win with just two words: “I defended.”

Stars of the felt such as Nikki Limo, Caitlin Comeskey and Marle Spragg, as well as Rania Nasreddine, have all taught us that many great poker players are female.
Over the course of half a century, we’ve met female poker pioneers such as Barbara Enright, modern day greats like Kristen Foxen and emerging talents in the form of Shiina Okamoto among others. Female players like Liv Boeree and Vanessa Selbst, who pushed the poker narrative during the initial ‘boom’ years have been added to by modern-day players like Nikki Limo and Caitlin Comeskey, who add content creation to winning at the felt.
