Kerber and Patricio Win Tag Team Gold in Brazilian WSOP Classic
A thrilling final day brought the $1,000-entry Tag Team Event #65 to a close in Las Vegas as the Brazilian duo of Kelvin Kerber and Peter Patricio beat Samy Boujmala and Hicham Mahmouki heads-up to claim their first WSOP bracelets. With a top prize of $184,780 split between the top two as well on a day of drama, just two hands were required heads-up to award Brazilian gold and witness a fervent rail almost bring the roof of the Horseshoe Las Vegas cardroom down.
A brilliant showdown between Kelvin Kerber and Peter Patricio from Brazil and Frenchmen Samy Boujmala and Hicham Mahmouki saw Brazilian joy at the conclusion of the 56th annual WSOP’s Tag Team event. With Kerber and Patricio winning their first gold bracelets, there was also a deep run at the final table for Angela Jordison and Maxwell Young among others.
Place | Player | Country | Prize |
---|---|---|---|
1st | Kelvin Kerber - Peter Patricio | Brazil | $184,780 |
2nd | Samy Boujmala - Hicham Mahmouki | France | $123,102 |
3rd | Steven Mccartney - Dominic Coombe | United States | $88,015 |
4th | Michael Lancaster - Derek Stark | United States | $63,750 |
5th | Conor Hannan - David Sathue | United States | $46,784 |
6th | Kyeongrim Shin - Hyomo Kang | South Korea | $34,793 |
7th | Quirin Heinz - Felix Rabas | Germany | $26,227 |
8th | Angela Jordison - Maxwell Young | United States | $20,042 |
9th | Feng Qian - Zhou Lin | China | $15,529 |
With nine left, the Chinese team of Feng Qian and Zhou Lin were all-in and at-risk with ace-eight via Fen Qian against the pocket nines belonging to Germany’s Felix Rabas. No help came for the Chinese duo and they bid the others farewell after cashing for $15,529, with each prize being split between the two team players in the Tag Team event.
Next to go were the pair with the highest-profile player at the final table. Angela Jordison has become one of the best-known poker players in the world in the past two years after a phenomenal run of success in live tournaments. Sadly for her and Maxwell Young, their bid for glory in this event ended in seventh place for $20,042. It was Young who was all-in, holding pocket eights against the ace-jack belonging to Hyomo Kang. A flop of T-6-2 was safe but there were so many outs for Team Shin to chase, including aces, jacks and diamonds, and with Kang’s partner Kyeongrim Shin watching on, an ace on the turn and jack on the river said goodbye to Jordison and Young.
After Germans Heinz and Rabas busted in seventh place for $26,227, the South Korean duo of Kyeongrim Shin and Hyomo Kang were all-in again, but this time by calling off their stack for their tournament lives. On a board showing 4-4-3-3-7 with three diamonds, Kelvin Kerber moved all-in with king-nine of diamonds. Shin called it off with king-seven for a rivered pair and their hand of two pair was no good against the Brazilians’ flush. Kerber and Patricio marched on, while Shin and Kang claimed $34,793 in sixth place.
With five teams left, Kerber and Patricio had timed their run perfectly. David Sathue was the next player to fall foul of them, along with his teammate Conor Hannan as the American duo finished fifth for $46,784. All-in with pocket fives, Sathue had the best of it agsinst Kerber’s ace-four. That was until a brutal runout of 6-3-2-5-Q gave the Brazilians a turned ‘wheel’ straight and sent Hannan and Sathue to the rail.
Next to go were the all-American team of Michael Lancaster and Derek Stark. If the pair sounded like a duo born from Game of Thrones, then theirs was a calm death by comparison, as Lancaster’s suited king-eight was shot down by Hicham Mahmouki’s ace-queen, a nine-high board doing no damage but crucially helping neither side improve. Stark and Lancaster went home with $63,750 in fourth place.
Two more Americans remained in the event but not for long. When Steven Mccartney and Dominic Coombe were all-in via Coombe’s ace-ten, they ran into Mahmouki again, this time with the ace-jack of clubs. A board of Q-6-2-A-4 sent the home team packing with $88,015 as French duo Boujmala and Mahmouki topped up their stack to 9.9 million chips.
Kerber and Patricio had an almost 2:1 lead going into the final battle and made it count almost immediately. On a board showing K-J-3-6-J, Mahmouki shoved the river with ace-king, but it was no good, as Kerber, who could barely turn over the cards with his hands shaking, tabled jack-eight for turned trips and the Brazilian rail could explode into noise.
While Samy Boujmala and Hicham Mahmouki won a very creditable score of $123,102 as runners up, Kelvin Kerber and Peter Patricio from Brazil took home their first-ever bracelets and $184,780 as champions.
“We were 30 left with a big stack, and we decided, let’s switch whenever you feel like [you’re not] on your A-game anymore.,” said Kerber after the event. “We didn’t mind switching a lot. We kept switching, and it was working. When we were six left, I just told him, if you want to, I got this. I think I got this guy. And he’s like, just go for it. I trust you.”
Kerber was passionate to a fault about his friend, discussing how, after 14 years as poker buddies, they have seen it all.
“It’s the dream that everybody that starts playing poker looks to [winning a bracelet]. He has been playing for a bit more than me, but we have been friends for my whole journey. We tried to give as much information as we can. It’s a good experience to be here with the rail and everything, but I’m glad [heads up] was fast!”
No-one will forget Kerber and Patricio’s triumph in Brazil after a magical Tag Team takedown in Las Vegas, Nevada at the 56th annual WSOP.
